Do you think about, plan for, and teach your children how to respond if you have to use your firearm? I sure hope so! They need to practice Active Self Protection as much as you do, so take these lessons to heart!
How do I protect my kids from an armed robber?
1. You must plan and train for your kids being with you in the moment of the assault. That means forming an emergency word for older kids (and SO’s who are not self-defenders) and training and reminders that if they see your gun, to GET DOWN and GET AWAY.
2. In transitional spaces especially, stay alert and keep your kids out of harm’s way. A transitional space is any location that (1) allows attackers to prey on potential victims with an element of surprise and (2) provides ready escape for the attackers. Since gas stations are transitional spaces, be especially careful there!
3. In that moment, don’t be touchy-feely with your little one. This dad could easily have pushed his little one toward the camera and then moved away from the camera, getting her out of the line of fire.
4. Always, always, ALWAYS put yourself between your children and danger. Never put your child between you and danger. You are their God-given protector, so put them in protected positions!
5. Moving away from your child is a smart move in a gunfight. This dad did eventually move away from his little one and drew attention with him, which shows how effective it is. Your firearm report will draw all the attention to it, so get it as far from your child as you can. That means moving and shooting!
6. Remember, every round you fire is your responsibility. This man shot a store employee, and that is not okay. Thankfully the story says the employee is recovering.
