This story is sad the victim did everything right I believe. He waited for his opportunity, he got shots on target (4 hits 3 in the torso).
Critical mistake that cost him his life was being too moral
"When Hider (the Perp) looked away, Simjee (the victim) pulled out his own gun and demanded Hider drop her weapon. Hider fired and Simjee shot back simultaneously, the plea agreement says."
The story suggests that he died because he asked the perp to drop her gun rather than protecting himself and his girlfriend.
I think this is a teaching moment.
Moral, yes.
Prudent, no.
Sad outcome.
Terrible.

Looks like Hider had a female accomplice.
So based on the victim's girlfriend's statement, the good guy Simjee stops to help 2 stranded women with 'car trouble', works on the car for an hour then gets robbed and killed for his trouble.
Hinder has pleaded guilty, lets hope the sentence befits the heinous nature of this crime.
Sentencing information here:
"While it was no mystery that 21-year-old Yasmine Marie Adel Hider of Oklahoma would receive 35 years in prison for robbery, second-degree murder in the death of Adam Simjee, and kidnapping the victim’s girlfriend Mikayla Paulus, since that was the punishment outlined in her plea agreement, it was less clear how her co-defendant, 37-year-old Krystal Diane Pinkins, would be punished. On Thursday, however, Pinkins, of Tennessee, received the maximum punishment of life in prison for robbery, murder, and unlawful use of a firearm during a crime of violence, several months after Hider testified against her at trial, leading to guilty verdicts on those counts."
"Six hours after the shooting, Pinkins was found at a remote campsite in the woods and arrested. Her 5-year-old son reportedly ran out wielding a loaded shotgun."
Larry Lindenman wrote a 4-part series of entries several years ago about additional risks and complications of verbal commands and holding attempts, along with step by step examples if the defender elects to do anyway. His blog has been defunct for quite some time now but I still refer back to it occasionally.
